Yellow Ribbon Schools: Full List

Understand how the Yellow Ribbon Program works, who qualifies, and how to find participating colleges by state.

If you're using the Post-9/11 GI Bill, Yellow Ribbon schools can cover tuition costs that exceed public school limits, including expensive private universities and out-of-state tuition.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is a partnership between the VA and participating colleges to help veterans and eligible dependents pay little to no out-of-pocket tuition.

What is the Yellow Ribbon program?

The Yellow Ribbon Program is a benefit under the Post-9/11 GI Bill that helps cover tuition and fees that exceed the standard VA limits. Participating schools contribute additional funding, which the VA matches—reducing or eliminating out-of-pocket costs.

How the Yellow Ribbon program works

Here’s how it works in simple terms:

  1. The VA sets a tuition cap for private and out-of-state schools
  2. If your school costs more than that cap, the remaining balance is uncovered
  3. A Yellow Ribbon school agrees to pay part of that remaining cost
  4. The VA matches that contribution

Result: You pay significantly less, or nothing at all!

Who qualifies for Yellow Ribbon?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill at 100% benefit level
  • Are a veteran, active duty service member, or eligible dependent
  • Are enrolled in a participating Yellow Ribbon school

Important:

Not all students qualify, even at participating schools. Many schools:

  • Limit the number of Yellow Ribbon participants
  • Set funding caps per student
