About This Scholarship

The Charles Shelton Foundation provides two non-renewable $2,000 awards offered annually. Once the scholarship recipients have enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education and submitted proof of enrollment to the sponsor, the scholarships will be awarded in the form of a check made payable to the institution attended by the scholarship recipient. The scholarship recipient must submit proof of enrollment on or before 31 August. The scholarship is awarded in split disbursements (1 September and 1 January). In the event of a tie, the scholarship will be split between the top two applicants.

Eligibility Requirements

Original Requirements

  • Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and provide an official copy of your transcript in a sealed envelope
  • Black African-American graduating HS senior, current college student or returning college student
  • Must be a legal U.S. resident
  • Must be a resident of one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia
  • Complete the Veterinary Scholarship Form
  • Provide two professional references from Professors that speak directly to your experience in Veterinary Medicine or Technology. One letter should be from a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) professor
  • Provide proof of full-time enrollment in a college or university
  • High School Requirements: Two professional references that speak to your experience in veterinary medicine. One must be from a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professor
  • High School Requirements: Proof of full-time enrollment in a college or university
  • High School Requirements: A minimum of 500-750 words answering the following question: Laboratory animal medicine and research are conducted to advance the field of human and veterinary medicine. Discuss the pros and cons of administering treatments to advance medical science but may cause pain or discomfort to research animals
  • Post-Secondary Requirements: Two professional references that speak to your experience in veterinary medicine. One must be from your current veterinary college
  • Post-Secondary Requirements: Proof of full-time enrollment in an accredited veterinary college
  • Post-Secondary Requirements: A minimum of 1500 words answering the following question: Laboratory animal medicine and research are conducted to advance the field of human and veterinary medicine. Discuss the pros and cons of administering treatments to advance medical science but may cause pain or discomfort to research animals
  • Resume (include achievements, honors, community service and school involvement)
