About this scholarship

Gap scholarship for Purple Heart recipients, veterans rated 100% disabled by the VA, or spouses killed in action. Awards cover remaining tuition and class fees after federal/state/Liberty and military aid are applied (excludes School of Aeronautics and School of Law class fees). Eligible for first associate's, bachelor's, master's degree or the first certificate at those levels only. Applicants must exhaust VA educational benefits, meet GPA minimums (2.0 undergrad, 3.0 graduate), submit required documentation and a 750-1000 word essay, and apply to the Office of Military Affairs.

Recipient of the Purple Heart OR rated 100% disabled by the Department of Veterans Affairs OR spouse was killed in action

May only be used for a student’s first Associate’s, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or the first certificate at one of these levels

Doctoral degrees and doctoral-level certificates are not eligible

Applicants who have already obtained a degree at another institution may not receive HFS for another degree or certificate at the same level at Liberty University

Non-degree seeking students are not eligible

Must have exhausted all Veterans Affairs (VA) educational benefits before receiving HFS dollars

Must maintain minimum GPA for continued award: 2.0 for undergraduate degrees, 3.0 for graduate degrees

Must submit a complete HFS application and all required supporting documents

Undergraduate applicants must submit proof of FAFSA for the current school year

Essay required: 750-1000 words, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt

Veterans/service members must submit Certificate of Eligibility for VA benefits and/or VA letter showing status of benefit eligibility

Disabled veterans must apply for Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment benefits (provide proof)

Spouses applying on the service member's death must submit marriage certificate, photo ID (not military ID), and report of casualty or death certificate showing KIA status
